Power cuts spark fears of repeat of 2008 crisis

ESKOM’s load shedding on Thursday raised the spectre of the 2008 electricity crisis that cost the economy billions.
But the reasons Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba gave for the controlled power cuts were similar to those of 2008 — depleted coal stockpiles and rain.
Business Unity South Africa (Busa) said it would seek a high-level meeting with the government as South Africa had suffered four power emergencies this year that were cumulatively beginning to have serious economic and business consequences. Read more…
