SAPVIA Solar PV Installed Capacity Data Dashboard
In October 2022, SAPVIA embarked on the task to accurately quantify the amount of Solar PV installations in South Africa. SAPVIA, in collaboration with GeoTerra Image and PrimeThought concluded an agreement to develop, market and launch a Solar PV database and Data product to the market in 2023.
The project accurately quantifies the installed capacity of solar PV in South Africa by feeding satellite imagery into a machine learning algorithm that classifies and quantifies the location, number of panels and the size of the Solar PV system. The algorithm captures systems from domestic to Commercial and Industrial to utility scale. Due to the history of the GIS partners the solar PV data can be analysed in conjunction with existing data, including building use type, available roof area, building age as well as living standards means or spending power metrics.
The public data portal tracks total installed capacity as well as the installed capacity per market segment, namely residential, Commercial and Industrial (C&I) SSEG, Commercial and industrial Large scale and Utility Scale. Provincial level data is made available exclusively to SAPVIA members.
GeoTerra Image has made the solar installed capacity dataset available as part of their larger GIS data offering allowing clients to incorporate the SAPVIA installed capacity dataset into existing GIS and spatial data products.

The PV GreenCard
SAPVIA is committed to supporting the development of a sustainable and safe solar PV sector. The PV GreenCard programme is designed to ensure quality and safety standards are introduced and maintained by all solar PV installers. This is now the leading quality assurance standard and training programme for solar PV installers.
Solar PV installers take part in specialized education and training which will enable them to be certified and registered on the PV GreenCard database. This certification means that these installers are proficient and compliant with all of the relevant national and municipal electrical regulations and can offer their clients reassurance of the safety and quality of the installation.
