PHARMACY STUDENT WANTS TO GIVE BACK TO HIS COMMUNITY

With the lack of essential health care services and a shortage of staff in the health sector, investing in health professions is crucial for the country’s development. This is one of the many reasons that Waterloo Solar is funding Oitsile Mongala, as part of its scholarship programme, as he pursues a Bachelor of Pharmacy at Witwatersrand University.  

The second-year student, from Vryburg, North West, chose this field of study due to his love of chemistry and desire to help others. When he graduates, in four years’ time, Oitsile plans to return home and plough his skills and passion back into his community.

“Because I come from a background where healthcare is in short supply, I make a point of staying focused on the main goal so that I can offer my services to the people in my community. Upon completing my studies, I plan to go back home and be of service to my fellow community members, as they are the first people I want to serve,” said Oitsile.

Launched in 2020, this scholarship programme exclusively targets learners from communities in the Naledi Local Municipality area and is aimed at providing opportunities to matriculants wishing to study at tertiary institutions.

“I am very grateful for this scholarship because it has given me the opportunity to study at one of the best universities in Africa, and most importantly, it spared my parents the financial strain they would have felt if I had not received this funding,” concluded Oitsile.

The scholarship fund covers tuition, accommodation, stationary, textbooks, laptop, administration fee, meals, transport and living allowance. It is exclusively available to qualifying students within the Vryburg, Kismet Park, Huhudi, Colridge and Dithakwaneng communities.
