LOCAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME OFFERS STUDENTS OPPORTUNITIES
A total of five students in the Northern Cape’s Sol Plaatje Municipal area, are currently benefiting from a local scholarship programme that offers them the opportunity to study at recognized universities and earn accredited bachelor’s degrees. Two of the students are due to obtain their undergraduate degrees at the end of this year.
Launched in 2021, the Matla A Bokone Solar bursary programme exclusively targets learners from communities in this specific municipal area and is aimed at providing support to the matriculants wishing to further their education.
“We are pleased with the career and qualification selections of our current scholars, and we are confident that they will be equipped with accredited qualifications to enter the employment market after their graduation,” said Lesego Mosiane, Community Liaison Officer for Matla A Bokone Solar, the programme funders.
Among the bursary beneficiaries graduating this year are Botshelo Lukas, a third and final year student in the field of Bachelor of Social Sciences in Psychology and Sociology at the University of the Free State, as well as Gary Leander, who is also a third and final year student in the field of Bachelor of Science in Data Science at the Sol Plaatje University.
The bursary fund covers tuition, accommodation, stationary, stipends, textbooks, laptop, administration fee, disbursement, and wrap-around support. It is available to students within the 50km radius of impact, who pass their 2022 Matric examinations and who qualify to study an undergraduate degree or National Diploma at a recognized University or TVET College. Applicants who passed Matric in previous years and are planning to study at a recognized tertiary institution will also be considered.
Other scholarship beneficiaries include Tshepang Mabogo, who is a second-year student in the field of Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering at the Central University of Technology; La Rochelle Horn, a second-year student in the field of Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase at the Sol Plaatje University; as well as Masego Tlhageng, who is a third-year student in the field of Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase at the University of the Free State.
