HIGH IMPACT MATHS & SCIENCE PROGRAMME FOR JOHN TAOLO GAETSEWE DISTRICT

A high-impact Maths and Science Programme will launch this month across 25 secondary and primary schools in the John Taolo Gaetsewe District, with the objective of significantly improve learner aptitude in these essential school subjects.
Set to benefit close to 35 000 children across beneficiary communities, Kathu Solar Park is providing the funding for the implementation these programmes, which are designed and customized to be aligned to the South African Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS). Teacher training commenced last month, on 24th and 25th of April. In addition, these schools will also be receiving hardware (laptops and projectors), all of which form part of the roll-out of this programme. Learners will have access to the programme resources from their electronic devices using a zero-rated platform.
The impact of the programme will be monitored over the next year, and it is envisaged that the reach of the programme will potentially be expanded”, said Cheryl Persensie, Economic Development Manager for Kathu Solar Park.
The Department of Education in the district, welcomed this programme and highlighted that the alignment of this programme to the curriculum, is expected to result in improved learning outcomes and increased participation in mathematics over the medium to long term.
Known as HeyMath and HeyScience, the world-class teaching methodologies will strengthen conceptual understanding of learners from Grades 1-12 by using real life contexts and interactive activities to drive deeper learning. Furthermore, the Maths Programme is a proven intervention, having delivered positive results over several years in five provinces.
About the Programmes:
The programmes have been developed by the University of Cambridge and built on the foundation of the proven Singapore Maths system. It equips educators on using ICT during class teaching and also during revision with learners, to ensure that their content knowledge and ICT skills improve. and hence, learner performance improves. The programme will amongst others improve learner performance and problem-solving skills.
