JOHANNESBURG – In 2070 we could be living oil free. Gas or solar energy could be the energy backbone systems of the future as politics, the economy and social forces act to shape national and international energy polices.
This is according to the 2013 Shell Lens Scenarios, which unpacks what the world’s energy dependence could look like in 2100. The scenarios are shaped by the so-called ‘resource stress nexus’ which is the intersection between water, energy and food and the trade-offs for government in shaping energy policies. The scenarios consider how governments are faced with rising standards of living but higher levels of inequality, greater global connectivity but increased security risks and the choice between national collaboration or gaining first mover advantage.
