Cold snap puts Eskom’s reserve margins under pressure

ESKOM’s reserve margins continue to be under pressure as temperatures drop, causing high power usage in households.
On Monday night, Eskom was expecting high demand and the capacity available at peak was 33,986MW. This was expected to cover the forecast demand of about 33,834MW.
“Households are urged to use electricity efficiently and to switch off geysers, pool pumps and all nonessential lighting and appliances between 5pm and 9pm,” the power utility said in its bi-weekly status bulletin. Last week, Eskom reported that the available power supply exceeded demand by a margin of only 0.17%. The recommended reserve margin is 10%-15%. Read more
