VIEWS FROM TASNEEM ESSOP, NP COMMISSIONER, AND KATE JAMES, SENIOR POLICY ADVISER FOR UK’S POWERING PAST COAL ALLIANCE
DATE: 08 September 2020 (Tuesday), 11am – 12:30 pm South African time
Dear stakeholder
The British High Commission, with the support of WWF-SA, International Institute for Sustainable Development and the South African Climate Action Network, invites you to the second of a series of webinars designed to explore UK and South African thinking on key issues linked to climate action, COP 26 and clean and resilient growth.
The UK wants COP 26 to secure the level of global ambition needed to meet the targets agreed in Paris. This needs all countries, including South Africa, to review and revamp their National Determined Contributions. There will be challenges and the need to secure a Just Transition is a key issue to address. Can a Just Transition be linked to net-Carbon-zero?
In this webinar, we about the work of the National Planning Commission SA and where things stand in terms of a Pathway for a Just Transition in SA. What are the NPC conclusions and views on the long term goals? How can energy transitions be accelerated while keeping climate justice at the core? As the COP 26 president, how does the UK understand the importance of the just transition? How can it balance ambition with the need for inclusion? – We will explore work being done under the Powering Past Coal Alliance, how a greater ambition can be achieved through a just transition and the plans the UK has to support the Just transition in SA.
