Position Overview

We are looking for a data-driven, analytical, and proactive Market Intelligence Specialist who bridges the gap between deep data analysis and commercial growth.

In this role, the Market Intelligence Specialist will be responsible for tracking, analysing, and forecasting South African, African and global solar photovoltaic (PV) market trends. They will act as bridge between our data gathering, market intelligence, by connecting data-driven market insights directly to the membership pipeline, various initiatives, events, webinars, and partnerships to identify and capture new business opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

Market Intelligence & Research (70%):

• Data Collection: Gather, clean, analyse both qualitative and quantitative data regarding solar PV deployment, supply chains, investments, regulatory updates, and energy market trends across South Africa, Africa and international markets, this including surveys such as SAREGs.
• Data Synthesis & Reporting: Transform datasets (such as NERSA registered generation facilities, installed capacity), industry reports, and customer metrics into clear dashboards, reports (including. State of Solar Report), and strategic presentations that equip members, partners, and broader stakeholder base with industry insights
• Publish quarterly market updates, relevant industry briefings, and co-develop white papers with the policy and technical teams
• Provide some data and market intelligence support to working groups
• Member & Stakeholder Engagement: Act as an internal and external expert on solar market data, presenting findings at workshops, webinars, and industry conferences. Respond to data inquiries from members and the media.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with the Technical, Policy, Communications, Partnership and Membership teams to ensure that advocacy campaigns and media outputs are underpinned by accurate data and market intelligence.
• Network Coordination: Maintain active channels with Stakeholders, include but not limited to associations, market research institutions, developers, IPPs, and equipment manufacturers to aggregate primary data and validate market statistics.

Business Development (30%):

• Lead Generation & Opportunity Mapping: Use market data to point out high-potential strategic partnership opportunities that would derive revenue beyond membership fees, such grant funding, data driven sponsorships, etc.
• Secure sponsorships for association’s activities such as industry conferences, Annual General Meeting (AGM), webinars, workshops, and policy reports.
• Go-to-Market Support: Collaborate closely with the membership and partnership teams to build data-driven pitches and proposals. And when required, assist with pitches and relationship building.

Job requirements: qualifications, skills and experience

• Education: University degree (bachelor’s with honours) in Economics, Engineering, Energy, Data Science, or a related quantitative field.
• Experience: more than 4 years of professional experience in market research, data analysis, energy economics, or consulting, ideally within the energy, renewables, or utility sector.
• Exposure and experience in the renewable energy, solar PV, energy policy, or climate change space.
• Technical & Analytical Skills:
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, familiarity with data analysis or visualization tools. Experience handling large datasets.
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills coupled with strong organisation and time management skills with an attention to detail
• Communication Skills: Exceptional written and spoken English with the ability to present technical or complex statistics in a clear, narrative-driven format. Additional Afrikaans language is a strong asset.
• Soft Skills: A self-starter with strong project management skills and an autonomous, highly organized, capable of juggling multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
