PARENTAL TRAINING PROGRAMME LAUNCHED IN NALEDI SCHOOLS

In an effort to enhance the role parents play in their children’s education,  a Parental Support Training Programme has launched, benefitting parents of learners across three local schools within the Naledi Local Municipal area. Through training workshops held at the schools, this programme equips parents with hands-on techniques to support their children’s reading, writing, and communication skills.

As a result of this programme, many learners are already showing notable improvements in both their academic performance and engagement in the classroom.

“We’ve noticed a real difference in the learners whose parents attended the workshops. Learners are more engaged, confident, and better prepared for their lessons,”  said one of the teachers.

This initiative, funded by Waterloo Solar and implemented in collaboration with educators and the READ Educational Trust, is designed to equip parents with the skills they need to foster literacy and academic success at home.

“Empowering parents is a key component in driving long-term educational success for learners. By providing practical tools that parents can use to reinforce literacy at home, we’re creating a more connected learning journey. We have partnered closely with local educators to ensure that the training content is aligned with the academic needs of the learners. This partnership not only equips parents with literacy strategies but also ensures that these techniques are integrated into the classroom for a consistent learning experience,” said Claire Phutiagae, Social Performance Practitioner for Waterloo Solar.

Hosted at Colinda Primary School, Retlaadira Primary School and Moeti Primary School, the topics covered included Listening and Speaking, Writing, Reading, Phonics, and Phonemic Awareness, with each session lasting three hours and attended by 20 to 60 engaged parents.

Furthermore, Waterloo Solar is planning follow-up sessions aimed at addressing evolving challenges and introducing digital literacy components. Additionally, certificates of participation will be awarded to parents, acknowledging their commitment to their children’s educational growth and success.
