Launch: 4th South African Renewable Energy Grid Survey (SAREGS)

Dear Members,

The South African Photovoltaic Industry Association (SAPVIA), The South African Wind Energy Association (SAWEA), and The National Transmission Company South Africa (NTCSA) are pleased to announce the launch of the 4th Annual South African Renewable Energy Grid Survey (SAREGS) – 2025 Edition. Building on the insights from 2024, the 2025 survey will continue to track market shifts and grid developments, reinforcing the critical need for a reliable, adaptive, and sustainable transmission network to support South Africa’s rapidly expanding renewable energy sector.

Launching on Wednesday, 25 June 2025, the survey continues to serve as an essential instrument in aligning South Africa’s renewable energy development pipeline with national grid planning and investment priorities. As the energy landscape evolves, SAREGS remains a prevailing example of collaboration between industry and the public sector.

Why SAREGS Matters

SAREGS provides critical data to Eskom and NTCSA Planning, directly informing:

  • Grid Capacity Connection Assessments (GCCA)
  • Transmission Development Plans (TDP)
  • Future grid infrastructure and expansion strategies
  • Investment decisions for public procurement, private generation, wheeling, and ITPs

By contributing accurate and up-to-date project data, Independent Power Producers (IPPs) ensure the renewable energy sector influences grid readiness and policy decisions that support rapid deployment and system reliability.

Call-to-Action

Independent Power Producers (IPPs) are required to submit their current project pipeline, including any developments hindered or abandoned due to grid capacity constraints. Given the dynamic evolution of the renewable energy sector, projects submitted in previous survey rounds (2022–2024) must be resubmitted if they remain actively planned for development in 2025. This ensures the latest data accurately reflects ongoing investment opportunities and grid readiness, supporting more effective infrastructure planning and policy alignment.

The post-2024 survey market landscape reflects significant regulatory and infrastructure advancements, driving greater renewable energy integration. These include the revised draft IRP 2024, approval of the Wheeling Framework, publishing of the Draft Regulations for Independent Transmission Projects (ITPs) as well as the approval of the Congestion Curtailment proposal thus unlocking a potential 3.4GW of grid capacity in constrained regions.

Key Dates and Submission Information

Important: All projects, including those submitted in prior years (2022–2024), must be resubmitted to be considered active in the 2025 survey.

2025 Survey Enhancements

This year’s survey has been updated to:

  • Capture more detailed data on procurement type, off-takers, and wheeling agreements
  • Reflect diverse generation technologies and off-taker configurations
  • Better support NTCSA’s long-term transmission planning

Data Handling and Confidentiality

All submissions will be handled directly by the NTCSA Planning Team, led by Mr Ronald Marais. Neither SAWEA, SAPVIA, nor their members will access the raw data.

For transparency, the 2024 SAREGS Results Presentation is attached for your reference. The interactive Power BI dashboard of the 2024 SAREGS results can be viewed here.
