Background and concept

South Africa stands on the brink of a major electricity market reform with the planned launch of the South African Wholesale Electricity Market (SAWEM) initially planned for 1 April 2026. This pivotal shift toward a competitive, transparent and independent electricity trading platform offers both challenges and opportunities for generators, licensed traders, large industrial users and mining operations.

This EE Business Intelligence webinar brings together key experts and stakeholders to unpack the SAWEM roadmap, regulatory and technical milestones, and the operational changes required for market readiness. Central to the discussion will be the importance of accurate energy forecasting, robust metering and reporting systems, and preparedness for balancing market obligations.

The webinar will also explore how flexible demand and dispatchable generation can unlock new revenue streams under SAWEM. With growing shares of variable renewable generation, the ability to respond dynamically to market signals – whether through load shifting, demand response or Virtual Power Plants – will be critical for competitiveness and system stability.

Participants will gain insights into the practical steps required to prepare for participation in SAWEM, including IT systems integration, energy market literacy, contracting strategies and regulatory compliance.

Join us to engage with thought leaders and market pioneers on the frontlines of South Africa’s energy transition – and prepare your organisation for the realities of a liberalised electricity market.

Format

This will be a 2.5-hour webinar conducted on the Zoom Webinar 1000 platform, which can accommodate up to 1000 concurrent participants/attendees. After an opening keynote address to contextualise the topic, four expert presenters will each have 20-minute slots to present on various aspects of the subject of the webinar, followed a wrap-up with key takeaways. Thereafter there will be a 30-minute open discussion and Q & A session, before closure.
