Empowering Soweto Through Renewable Energy: Women-led Just Transition Centre Launch
Dear SAPVIA Members,
We’re excited to share a powerful new initiative at the intersection of gender empowerment, community resilience, and renewable energy.
Introducing the Women-led Just Transition Centre in Soweto
A collaborative effort between Earthlife Africa and Shine Collab, this project aims to create a visible and transformative renewable energy hub in Soweto, Johannesburg—led by women, for the community.
Rooted in Soweto’s history of electricity access struggles, this centre is a response to the need for socially-owned, community-driven energy solutions that are too often overlooked in national Just Transition portfolios.
🌱 What the Centre Will Offer:
- Demonstrations of renewable technologies like solar power and biodigesters
- An educational walk-through experience showcasing Soweto’s electrification journey and climate resilience
- Monthly community forums and film screenings on energy and climate justice
- A micro organic garden promoting sustainable food systems
- Locally made refreshments prepared using renewable energy technologies
- Empowerment of local women leaders through the selection of community champions
This initiative will renovate and repurpose a local municipal facility, turning it into a hub of education, empowerment, and renewable energy demonstration.
By championing a women-led, bottom-up model, Earthlife Africa and Shine Collab aim to drive a just transition that is inclusive, practical, and people-powered.
