Technical Advisor: Renewable Energies / Energy Efficiency Project Development
Global supply chains including the automotive industry have adopted ambitious climate targets focusing on CO2 neutral production by 2050 and has joined the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) with commitment to bring its economic activities in line with the Paris Agreement. The supply chain emissions are especially relevant as it accounts for most of the CO2 emissions within a product’s life cycle. To address this challenge, many European companies are integrating stricter emissions targets for suppliers into its purchasing process. In order to meet stricter emission criteria, businesses need to track their emissions, set their own targets, identify reduction potential and implement suitable measures.
South Africa is the core automotive industry for the whole African continent providing access to other African countries. In South Africa, production comes at extremely high CO2 emissions resulting from abundant and inefficient fossil power generation. Therefore, meeting stricter emission criteria will most likely be cumbersome. Many small and medium suppliers are not capable of meeting forthcoming sustainability requirements set out by multinational European companies.
The Project Development Unit has established cooperation with a global automotive manufacturer to support local suppliers in South Africa to set up CO2 reduction targets towards carbon neutrality, identifying reduction measures, develop renewable energy and energy efficiency projects, assess the local framework conditions for implementing renewable energy and energy efficiency measures in order to provide solid recommendations to suppliers during the project development.
Therefore, the Project Development Unit is looking to hire an advisor (a.k.a. country representative) to pre-develop implementable renewable energy and energy efficiency project opportunities for automotive suppliers in South Africa.
