Dust-up over Gigaba's coal plan

Business Live Online:Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba’s proposed strategy to secure lower-priced and better-quality coal for Eskom could include the implementation of export quotas and legislating the quality of coal supplied to the state-owned utility.
There are concerns that Eskom suffers not only from a poor supply of coal, but from coal of a deteriorating quality. The better grades of coal are said to be diverted to lucrative export markets in Asia.
“This is one of those typical South African debates, not that different from the nationalisation or state-participation debates, with each side wanting to tip the scale,” said Sholto Dolamo, head of resources at Stanlib. Read more…
